Our two weeks with Madadventurer was a truly amazing experience. We were volunteering in Kurunga, a small town north of Nairobi, helping to build two extra classrooms for a primary school. The project gave us an inspiring insight into the charitable works of Madadventurer and allowed us to integrate into Kenyan society, seeing first hand the challenges and successes of local life.We spent every day on the building site trying to fulfill any demands the foreman made, be it mixing concrete or splitting stones. We were fed and watered extremely well and all felt really satisfied at the end of the day.The daily highlight were the chapattis and chi, a very welcome excuse for a sit down! The on site atmosphere was always upbeat, the volunteers keen and the children both excited and curious at the work of the 'muzungos'!Their shyness didn't last and it wasn't long until we all had pen pals and the building work became interrupted by games of football! After work everyone had a thirst for a cheeky 'tuska' - we learnt some Kenyan songs and dancing that propelled us through the next day of building! Our house was brilliant - there's no easier way to get to know someone than by living together and by the end of the week we were a really close team.It was great to be working on such a constructive project with like minded people, and we all traveled away together to nearby attractions for the weekends.
We all felt that the project was an extremely worthy cause and by the end of the two weeks had developed a real emotional attachment to the school and to Kurunga itself - the days passed so quickly that we wished we could have stayed for longer and would all jump at the chance to do another Madadventurer project.
