Madventurer Medic Volunteers

Anna Bradley Jul/Aug 09 - Typical day as a Mad Medic in Ghana, Ho:

My typical day, I went to placement with the others who were doing the same placement as me, we on the medical placement worked from 8am until 1pm every day, some days we were on wards others we got to go into surgeries, we even saw some live births! After placement we all went back to the house for lunch and then had the afternoon free, when we would go to internet cafes, or go to friends houses that we had made, then the others would arrive back from the orphanage around 5pm, and we would all have dinner together, and then either stay in the house and relax or watch a film, or we would go out to the White House or Tayco Lodge and relax there, then we would head back and stay up or get an early night's sleep. But every day varied as to what happened on placement or where we went in the afternoon.

Best bits - The best bit of the project was being a part of a group of people who are all there to help out and to experience a new culture.

Very well organised, but very difficult to leave!! But I don't think Madventurer can do anything to help with that!

The crew were amazing, I couldn't have asked for better people to have been with! They always helped us when we got lost, or weren't too sure about things, and without them I know my time wouldn't have been so enjoyable.

Haha, I have a lot of most memorable moments, I don't think I could possibly single one out, I had four weeks worth of them!

An absolutely amazing experience, four weeks was not long enough! Gives a real insight into other cultures without throwing you into it all alone!

Yiannis Skarparis July 09 - It has been really amazing so far. The conditions at the house we live at are much better than what I thought it would be. Courage, our crew leader, has been doing a very good and productive job so far, so as to satisfy everyone's wants and needs, and he is always working towards the benefits of the whole group. I am very happy and satisfied by the organisation of the placement so far, and Gideon and Courage are always there for us whenever we need them. The experience at the hospital is really amazing and we try helping the nursing stuff at the OPD by taking blood pressures, temperatures and weight. Also, we have observed many surgeries, consultations and went for a round on each ward. The people in this town are very friendly and we are having a very good time so far.

Andrianos Yiorkas July 09 - I am glad to say that our time in Ghana is going on amazingly well! Things are much different from back home but I accepted the fact I came to another culture and I soon coped with the situation. The people are very friendly, especially Gideon and Courage who are willing to help and guide us at any time. I am quite pleased with the Mad House and generally I coped with the way people live here, their activities and their diet. The placement at the hospital is great and we both, Yiannis and I try our best to help in some weak areas.Everything is going well and I am very pleased with it, as I would like to get as much as possible from this Madventure!

Watch this spare for more updates and photos as our volunteers return home in the coming weeks! If you are interested in getting signed up to a Medic, teaching or orphanage Placement in Ghana for 2010 then please don't hesitate to get in touch. You can email me on elainel@madventurer.com or give us a call on 0845 121 1996.We can even put you in touch with previous Madventurers to find out their experiences!
