Supon Household Latrines
Our Volunteers worked with a local NGO called 'The Afram Plains Development Organisation' to provide household latrines for the community of Supon. These latrines are two-seater (male and female) and one is constructed to serve around 10 families. Currently the village has 40% coverage, but APDO is aiming to achieve 100%.
APDOis concerned with poverty reduction and improvement of the welfare of the rural population. APDO have implemented a number of donor funded projects in education, water, sanitation, environment and village infrastructure development.A very innovative NGO, APDO pioneered the use of a 'Sanitation Market' to promote the different latrine options to the communities, before deciding together on the best and most financially feasible option.
Working closely with the communities concerned, APDO has discovered just how far reaching the effects are of not having access to sanitation facilities. After carrying out a local survey concerning school attendance in the region they realized that girls tended to stop attending school at around the age of 12. This was because they were becoming too self conscious to attend a school without toilet facilities
