Good morning!
We've been dumped in a town and told to waste an hour whilst our cook buys supplies so thought a quick update would be nice.
Safari started with a nice night in a hotel with a pool! A freezing pool, but still a pool, so we braved a few lengths to make it worthwhile. Then we had a meeting with our tour leader who explained how everything on the safari bus works. They're very hygiene conscious so he explained how when we wash dishes we have to 'frap' them dry (he has issues with r and l). We must also store our bags in the 'rockers'. We're getting the hang of understanding what he is saying now...
The food they cook is pretty amazing. At the beginning of the tour our leader told us his aim is to make us all gain 5kg by the end, and so far it's looking quite likely! Every breakfast there is a fry up and every dinner we have a soup starter as well as our main meal.
Our first night we had a bit more luxury staying in a monastry with beds and hot showers, after which we set off early next day to enter Tanzania and camp by Lake Victoria. It was a long drive but truly worth it once we arrived - the lake is surrounded by sand and palm trees, making it feel very much like a beach! There were supposed to be optional excursions of a boat ride or a bike ride but everyone simply chose to sunbathe and frolick :) We also got more hot showers! For dinner last night we had some freshwater fish caught straight from the lake (yes, fish!) which was actually really nice. It was a shame to leave so soon.
The next few days we will be in animal parks so probably nowhere near internet. We are hoping to see lots of exciting animals, though apparently there are no fences around the campsite so at night most tourists encounter frequent visits from hyenas and jackals (!)
Wish us luck! Lots of love,
Lyndsey and Camilla xxx
